Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir was formed in 1986 to sing services in the cathedral when the professional choir was on holiday or performing elsewhere. It is an amateur, mixed voice choir trained to sing liturgical music, although it does occasionally become involved in concerts with a more varied programme. The choir sings about fifty services a year in Wells Cathedral and also spends a week in residence providing the music in another cathedral. A typical week-end would mean singing at Evensong on the Saturday and at Eucharist, Mattins and Evensong on the Sunday. The choir accepts private engagements in the cathedral and outside (weddings, funerals, thanksgivings, etc.) for which a fee is charged. Being a liturgical choir there is no subscription nor music charges, but members do bear their own travelling expenses. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings, usually in the Undercroft of the cathedral, from 7.45 to 9.15 pm.
The choir is fortunate to have as its director an ex Kings College, Cambridge choral scholar. It is a real pleasure and privilege to sing in the cathedral and members put a great deal of effort into learning the music. The repertoire continues to increase and the choir constantly strives to improve its standard of performance. A reasonable standard of sight reading is expected and familiarity with the liturgy is useful. The choir is always glad to welcome new members: it is not big enough to get lost in nor small enough to feel too exposed. The members are friendly and anyone who enjoys singing church music would be hard pressed to find a more splendid place in which to do it.
